Sunflower

Sunflower (Lat. Helianthus – sun flower) – a genus of plants of Asteraceae family. This vast and polymorphic genus, originated from North and South America, has 108 species at present. Oil sunflower or annual sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is the most well-known species of this plant genus. This species is cultivated practically all around the world and is used for sunflower- seed oil production. Topinambur or Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus) also belongs to the genus, its root-crops are used as  food. Helianthus atrorubens, Helianthus decapetalus, Helianthus agrophyllus, Helianthus lactiflorus and Helianthus cuccumerifoliius are also grown as ornamental plants.
